Finally realizing I want to be a comic artist
Hello cozies! Thank you so much for sticking around and reading this month’s blog. Today, I just wanted to share how I finally decided that I wanted to be a comic artist.
Although, I enjoy trying different art mediums and art styles (and I still paint every now and then), my real passion has always been for comics. In an earlier blog that I shared on my website, I had mentioned that I had made a comic when I was around 4. It wasn’t very good but I remember I enjoyed making it.
I’ve always loved reading comics since I was young. I grew up reading Archie comics, the comics in the Sunday papers and many others. While on my art journey and starting my own business, I was not only relearning art, but also trying to figure out which type of art I wanted to create and sell.
I’ve done the traditional route with watercolour paintings. I also attempted making cute little figures out of polymer clay. Then I moved on to digital artwork and tried designing stickers and also printable planners. I couldn’t keep up with all those ideas and eventually burned out. I realized that even though I had done a lot of research on what type of art businesses worked out for others, that those things weren’t something that I wanted to pursue.
I did enjoy making those things, but they weren’t something that I really wanted to do day in and day out. And while it may be obvious for others to realize this, it took me time to realize that I needed to pursue an art form that I genuinely liked. So, I started making the comic ideas that I had written about a long time ago and finally started posting them. I’ve also turned some into zines. (I will share some of my videos talking about this process down below.)
This just goes to show that you can be experimental with your art. Make the art that you feel passionate about. Not what you think you should be creating. And don’t feel boxed in even when you do find what you want to specialize in. You’ll find that many artists - past and present - desire to change things up every now and then. So, have fun with your creativity.
That’s all for now, take care cozy artists. Wish you all the best on your personal journeys.
